Target Account Engagement Rate

Percentage of defined ICP target accounts showing measurable engagement with marketing content or campaigns

What is Target Account Engagement Rate?

Target account engagement rate is the percentage of the accounts on an account-based marketing list that have shown some engagement with your marketing. It shows whether the accounts you have chosen to pursue are paying attention.

It is a leading indicator for account-based programmes. Engagement from a target account usually comes well before a sales conversation, so it shows early whether the approach is working.

Formula
(Target accounts with ≥1 engaged touchpoint / Total target accounts in programme) × 100

How to calculate it

Divide the number of target accounts with at least one engaged touchpoint by the total number of target accounts in the programme, and multiply by 100.

For example, if a programme targets 200 accounts and 70 of them have engaged with at least one email, page visit or event, the rate is (70 / 200) x 100 = 35%.

Define what counts as engagement and, if possible, weight stronger signals, such as attending an event, more heavily than a single page visit. Report it for the current period rather than as a running total.

Where it is used

  • Monitoring an ABM programme

See whether target accounts are responding to the outreach.

  • Prioritising sales follow-up

Pass engaged accounts to sales while interest is fresh.

  • Adjusting content and channels

Find which activities engage target accounts and which are ignored.

How to improve it

Tips and common mistakes

  • Engagement is not intent. Look for repeated or senior-level activity before assuming buying interest.
  • Check that contacts are correctly matched to accounts, or the rate will be wrong.
  • Review the target list so the rate is not diluted by accounts that no longer fit.
