Cost per Click (CPC)

Average cost paid per click on a paid advertisement

What is Cost per Click (CPC)?

Cost per click is the average amount paid each time someone clicks on an ad. It divides total advertising spend by the number of clicks received.

It shows how expensive it is to bring traffic to a website through paid channels. Lower is not always better, because cheap clicks from the wrong audience are worth less than expensive clicks from buyers.

How to calculate it

Divide total ad spend by the total number of clicks in the same period.

For example, if a campaign spent 3,000 and received 2,000 clicks, the cost per click is 3,000 / 2,000 = 1.50.

On many platforms this is the price you pay in an auction, so it moves with competition, quality scores and targeting. Compare it by campaign, keyword and audience rather than relying on one blended figure.

Where it is used

  • Managing paid budgets

Estimate how much traffic a given budget will buy.

  • Comparing keywords and audiences

Identify which targeting choices are most expensive and whether they are worth it.

  • Monitoring competition

A rising cost per click can signal more competitors bidding on the same terms.

How to improve it

Tips and common mistakes

  • Do not chase the cheapest clicks. Cost per lead or per sale is the measure that matters.
  • Compare against your own trend, since costs differ enormously by industry and keyword.
  • Check by device and location, since averages can hide very different costs.
