Brand Awareness Among Target Audience

Percentage of the defined target population aware of the organisation and its mission

What is Brand Awareness Among Target Audience?

Brand awareness among the target audience is the percentage of surveyed people in your intended market who know your organisation. It focuses on the people who matter to the business, rather than the general public.

The measure shows whether brand-building reaches the right people, which matters more than being widely known among people who will never buy.

(Survey respondents aware of organisation / Total respondents surveyed) × 100

How to calculate it

Survey a representative sample of your target audience, divide those aware of the organisation by the total surveyed, and multiply by 100.

For example, if 180 of 600 people in the target market say they know the organisation, awareness is (180 / 600) x 100 = 30%.

Define the target audience carefully and screen respondents to match. Ask the same question in the same way each time so waves are comparable, and separate unprompted from prompted awareness.

Where it is used

  • Measuring brand campaigns

See whether awareness in the intended market is rising.

  • Choosing where to focus

Compare awareness across segments and regions to find where the brand is least known.

  • Benchmarking against rivals

See how well known you are compared with competitors among the same people.

How to improve it

Tips and common mistakes

  • Awareness moves slowly, so judge it over quarters, not weeks.
  • A small or unrepresentative sample can mislead. Use enough respondents.
  • Awareness is not preference. Pair it with a measure of how people view the brand.
