Community Members
Total size of the brand’s developer or user community (Slack, Discord, forum)
What is Community Members?
Community members is the number of active members on a community platform at the end of a period. It shows how large the audience is that an organisation can talk to, support and learn from.
A growing community can lower support costs, provide product feedback and create advocates, so its size is an early indicator of the value it may deliver.

- Count of active members in community platform at end of period
How to calculate it
Count the members with active status on the platform at the end of the period.
For example, if a community ended the quarter with 8,200 active members, the figure is 8,200.
Decide what makes a member active, such as having logged in within the last 90 days, and apply it consistently so the number is not inflated by dormant accounts.
Where it is used
Tracking community growth
Monitor whether the community is gaining active members over time.
Estimating reach
Understand how many people can be reached with updates and events.
Planning resources
Size moderation and programming to the community's scale.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- Size is not health. Read it with an engagement measure.
- Remove inactive and fake accounts so the number is honest.
- Aim for members who help each other, since that is what makes a community last.
