Community Engagement Rate
Percentage of community members who post, comment or react in a given period
What is Community Engagement Rate?
Community engagement rate is the percentage of a community's members who actively take part in a period, for example by posting, replying or reacting. It shows whether a community is alive or merely large.
A healthy community supports customers, generates ideas and builds loyalty, and engagement is the clearest sign that members find it worthwhile.

How to calculate it
Divide the number of active participants by the total number of community members, and multiply by 100.
For example, if a community has 5,000 members and 750 of them posted or replied this month, the rate is (750 / 5,000) x 100 = 15%.
Define what counts as active and keep it constant. Track the rate monthly and watch how it changes as the community grows, since large communities often have lower rates.
Where it is used
Assessing community health
Tell a thriving community from one that is only growing in size.
Testing engagement ideas
See whether events, prompts or moderation changes increase participation.
Justifying the investment
Show that the community provides value through active use.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- A small active community is often worth more than a large silent one.
- Reply quickly to new members. First impressions decide whether they return.
- Expect the rate to fall as membership grows, and compare against your own history.
