Lead Velocity Rate (LVR)

Month-over-month percentage growth in the number of qualified leads generated, a leading predictor of future revenue growth

What is Lead Velocity Rate (LVR)?

Lead velocity rate is the month-on-month growth in the number of qualified leads. It shows how quickly the pool of potential customers is expanding and is widely used as a leading indicator of future revenue growth.

Because qualified leads today become customers in the months ahead, changes in lead velocity tend to show up in revenue later. That makes it a useful early warning of a slowdown or acceleration.

Formula
((Qualified leads this month − Qualified leads last month) / Qualified leads last month) × 100

How to calculate it

Subtract last month's qualified leads from this month's, divide by last month's, and multiply by 100.

For example, if there were 400 qualified leads last month and 460 this month, the rate is ((460 - 400) / 400) x 100 = 15%.

Because a single month can be noisy, many teams also look at a rolling average across three months. Use the same definition of a qualified lead throughout.

Where it is used

  • Early warning on growth

Spot a slowdown in demand months before it appears in revenue figures.

  • Forecasting

Use the trend in qualified leads to project future pipeline and bookings.

  • Testing investment

See whether a change in marketing spend actually accelerated the flow of qualified leads.

How to improve it

Tips and common mistakes

  • Seasonality can swing the monthly figure. Compare with the same month last year as well as the previous month.
  • A small base makes percentages jump around. Interpret it with the absolute numbers beside it.
  • Rapid lead growth with falling conversion is not healthy growth. Check quality too.
