MQL-to-Opportunity Conversion Rate
Percentage of MQLs that are accepted by sales and converted to pipeline opportunities
What is MQL-to-Opportunity Conversion Rate?
The MQL-to-opportunity conversion rate is the percentage of marketing qualified leads that sales accepts and turns into a real sales opportunity. It shows how well the leads marketing passes over match what sales can actually sell to.
It is one of the clearest measures of alignment between marketing and sales. A low rate usually means the definition of a qualified lead, or the follow-up process, needs attention.

- (Opportunities created from MQLs / Total MQLs passed to sales) × 100
How to calculate it
Divide the number of opportunities created from MQLs by the total number of MQLs passed to sales, and multiply by 100.
For example, if 200 MQLs were passed to sales in a quarter and 30 became opportunities, the rate is (30 / 200) x 100 = 15%.
Track MQLs by the period in which they were passed over and allow a consistent time window for them to convert. Break the figure down by source, since it varies widely between channels.
Where it is used
Aligning marketing and sales
Use one shared number to discuss whether the leads handed over are the right ones.
Forecasting pipeline
Estimate how many opportunities a given volume of MQLs should create.
Choosing where to invest
Favour channels whose MQLs turn into opportunities, not just those that produce the most of them.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- If conversion is low but sales is slow to follow up, the problem is process, not lead quality.
- Keep the time window the same each period so the rate can be compared over time.
- Track it alongside the win rate, since an opportunity that never closes has not really proved the lead was good.
