Content Engagement Rate

Average level of interaction (likes, shares, comments, downloads) per published content piece

What is Content Engagement Rate?

Content engagement rate is the percentage of people who saw your content and interacted with it. Interactions include clicks, shares, comments, reactions and time spent, depending on how the business defines them.

It shows whether content is worth the effort of creating, which views and traffic alone cannot tell you. It is the basic quality measure for a content programme.

Total engagements across all content / Total content impressions × 100

How to calculate it

Divide the total number of engagements across your content by the total number of impressions, and multiply by 100.

For example, if your content earned 1,800 engagements from 60,000 impressions in a month, the rate is (1,800 / 60,000) x 100 = 3%.

Decide up front what counts as an engagement, and use the same definition for every piece. Break the figure down by content type and topic, since the overall rate hides large differences between pieces.

Where it is used

  • Choosing what to make more of

Identify the topics and formats that resonate, and plan more of them.

  • Retiring weak content

Find pieces that draw attention but no interaction and improve or drop them.

  • Reporting on the content programme

Show whether content is holding attention, beyond the number of pieces published.

How to improve it

Tips and common mistakes

  • Compare like with like. Engagement norms differ a lot between formats and channels.
  • Engagement is a means, not the end. Check that it leads to leads and sales.
  • Watch out for vanity interactions that do not show real interest.
