Gross Written Premium (GWP) Growth Rate
Period-over-period growth in total premiums written before reinsurance
What is Gross Written Premium (GWP) Growth Rate?
Gross written premium (GWP) growth rate is the percentage change in total premiums written by an insurer from one period to the next. It shows how fast the insurance business is growing.
GWP is the main measure of insurance sales volume, so its growth is a core indicator of commercial performance.

- Formula
- ((GWP this period − GWP prior period) / GWP prior period) × 100
How to calculate it
Subtract prior-period GWP from this period's GWP, divide by prior-period GWP, and multiply by 100.
For example, if GWP rose from 50,000,000 to 56,000,000, growth is 12%.
Separate growth from new business, renewals and price changes, and compare with profitability, since growth at the cost of poor underwriting is not healthy.
