Social Media Reach
Total number of unique users who saw the brand’s content across social platforms in a period
What is Social Media Reach?
Social media reach is the number of unique people who saw your content across social platforms in a period. Each person is counted once, however many times they saw it.
It shows how big an audience your social activity actually touches, including people who do not follow you. It is the standard awareness measure for social media and the starting point for judging whether that attention leads to engagement and action.

How to calculate it
Add up the unique reach figures reported by each platform for the period.
For example, if your content reached 30,000 people on one network, 12,000 on another and 6,000 on a third in a month, total reach is 30,000 + 12,000 + 6,000 = 48,000.
The same person can appear on more than one platform, so the total slightly overstates true unique people. Use the platform-level figures to compare posts, and keep paid and organic reach separate so you can see what the content earned by itself.
Where it is used
Measuring awareness
See how many people your social presence puts your brand in front of.
Comparing content
Identify the topics and formats that travel furthest beyond your existing followers.
Assessing paid support
Compare organic and paid reach to judge what boosting posts adds.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- Reach is not engagement. A large audience that does nothing is of limited value.
- Report organic and paid reach separately, or paid spend will mask weak organic performance.
- Definitions differ by platform, so compare within a platform rather than across them.
