Campaign ROI
Net revenue or pipeline generated from a specific campaign relative to the total cost of running that campaign
What is Campaign ROI?
Campaign ROI measures how much return a single marketing campaign generated compared with what it cost. It expresses the profit from the campaign as a proportion of the money spent on it.
It is used to decide which campaigns to repeat, scale or stop. Because it looks at one campaign at a time, it is more specific than an overall marketing return figure and helps compare very different activities on the same footing.

- (Revenue or pipeline attributed to campaign − Campaign cost) / Campaign cost × 100
How to calculate it
Subtract the campaign cost from the revenue or pipeline attributed to it, divide by the campaign cost, and, if you want a percentage, multiply by 100.
For example, if a campaign cost 10,000 and generated 35,000 of attributed revenue, the ROI is (35,000 - 10,000) / 10,000 = 2.5, which is 250%. It is sometimes quoted as a multiple instead, so state which form you use.
Decide in advance what counts as cost, including media, creative, tools and time, and how revenue is attributed, since both change the answer.
Where it is used
Choosing what to repeat
Rank past campaigns by return to decide which formats and audiences deserve another run.
Justifying budget
Show what a specific campaign returned when asking for more investment.
Comparing unlike activities
Put an event, an email series and a paid campaign on the same scale.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- Returns often fall as you scale a campaign, so a good result at small spend does not guarantee the same at large spend.
- Use pipeline-based ROI for long sales cycles, and label it as an early estimate.
- Include staff and agency time where possible, or the return looks better than it is.
