Safety Incident Rate
Energy – recordable safety incidents per million hours worked across field and plant operations
What is Safety Incident Rate?
Safety incident rate is the number of recordable incidents for every million hours worked. It shows how often incidents occur in relation to the amount of work done.
In energy and utilities, where the work can be hazardous, it is a central measure of safety performance.

- Formula
- (Recordable incidents × 1,000,000) / Total hours worked
How to calculate it
Multiply the number of recordable incidents by 1,000,000, then divide by total hours worked.
For example, if there were 5 recordable incidents over 2,500,000 hours, the rate is (5 x 1,000,000) / 2,500,000 = 2.
Use a consistent definition of recordable incident, and include contractor hours where relevant.
