Promotion Redemption Rate

Percentage of issued discount codes or promotional offers that are redeemed by customers

What is Promotion Redemption Rate?

Promotion redemption rate is the percentage of issued offers, such as coupons or discount codes, that customers actually use. It shows how appealing and accessible a promotion is.

A low rate can mean the offer is weak, hard to use or poorly targeted, while a very high rate may mean the discount is too generous and is costing margin.

How to calculate it

Divide the number of promotions redeemed by the number issued, and multiply by 100.

For example, if 20,000 vouchers were sent and 1,600 were redeemed, the rate is (1,600 / 20,000) x 100 = 8%.

Track redemption by segment, channel and offer type. Compare with the incremental sales the promotion generated to check it is worth its cost.

Where it is used

  • Testing offers

Compare different discounts and formats to see which customers use.

  • Assessing targeting

See which audiences respond and which ignore promotions.

  • Managing cost

Estimate the cost of a promotion from the expected number of redemptions.

How to improve it

Tips and common mistakes

  • A high redemption rate is not automatically good if it comes from heavy discounting.
  • Watch for customers who wait for offers before buying.
  • Track profit after discount, not just redemptions.
