Product-Led Growth (PLG) Activation Rate
Percentage of free or trial sign-ups that complete a key activation milestone within the product
What is Product-Led Growth (PLG) Activation Rate?
Activation rate in a product-led growth model is the percentage of new trial or free-plan users who complete the key action that shows they have experienced the product's value. It measures how well the product turns sign-ups into engaged users.
In product-led growth, the product itself brings in and converts customers. Activation is the moment a sign-up becomes a real user, so it is one of the strongest predictors of who will eventually pay.

- Formula
- (Users completing activation milestone / Total trial sign-ups) × 100
How to calculate it
Divide the number of users who complete the activation milestone by the total number of trial sign-ups, and multiply by 100.
For example, if 1,000 people signed up for a trial and 320 completed the activation step, the activation rate is (320 / 1,000) x 100 = 32%.
The main task is choosing the milestone. It should be an action that, in your data, is closely linked to users staying and paying, such as inviting a colleague or completing a first project, rather than something easy like confirming an email address.
Where it is used
Improving onboarding
Test changes to the first-use experience and see whether more people reach the milestone.
Predicting conversion
Estimate future paid conversions from the number of users who activate.
Finding drop-off points
Identify where new users stall on the way to their first success.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- Choose a milestone that predicts retention, not one that is easy to hit.
- Speed matters. Users who reach value in their first session are far more likely to continue.
- Measure activation within a fixed window so cohorts can be compared.
