Cost per Lead (CPL)
Average cost to generate one marketing lead
What is Cost per Lead (CPL)?
Cost per lead is the average amount a marketing team spends to generate one new lead. It divides total marketing spend in a period by the number of leads captured in the same period.
It is one of the most widely used efficiency measures in demand generation because it is simple and comparable across channels. On its own it says nothing about lead quality, so it is best read alongside conversion measures further down the funnel.

How to calculate it
Divide total marketing spend in the period by the number of leads generated in that period. Include everything that contributed to lead generation, such as media, tools, agency fees and, where you can, staff time.
For example, if a team spends 12,000 in a month and captures 600 leads, the cost per lead is 12,000 / 600 = 20.
Calculate it monthly for the overall programme and separately for each channel, since a blended figure hides the channels that are much cheaper or more expensive than the average.
Where it is used
Comparing channels
Line up the cost per lead of paid search, events, content and email to see where budget buys leads most cheaply.
Budget planning
Work out how many leads a given budget should produce, or how much is needed to hit a lead target.
Spotting efficiency changes
A rising figure is an early sign that a channel is saturating or that campaigns need refreshing.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- A low cost per lead can be a bad sign if the leads never convert. Always pair it with a downstream measure such as cost per qualified lead.
- Use the same definition of a lead across all channels, or the comparison is meaningless.
- Expect the figure to vary a lot by industry and deal size, so compare against your own history first.
