Cost per MQL
Average cost to generate one Marketing Qualified Lead
What is Cost per MQL?
Cost per marketing qualified lead (MQL) is the average spend needed to produce one lead that meets the agreed threshold for being passed towards sales. It divides total marketing spend by the number of MQLs generated in the same period.
It is more useful than cost per lead because it counts only leads that have shown enough fit and interest to be worth pursuing. It connects marketing spend to something sales will actually accept.

How to calculate it
Divide total marketing spend in the period by the number of MQLs generated in that period. Use the same spend definition every time, and count an MQL only when it first meets the qualification threshold.
For example, with 15,000 spent in a quarter and 150 MQLs generated, the cost per MQL is 15,000 / 150 = 100.
Break it down by channel and campaign. The overall figure is a useful headline, but decisions come from the differences underneath it.
Where it is used
Evaluating campaigns
Judge campaigns on qualified output rather than raw lead volume.
Setting funnel targets
Combine it with MQL-to-opportunity conversion to work out what a closed deal costs in marketing spend.
Agreeing goals with sales
Give both teams a shared number based on a lead definition they have both signed up to.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- If the MQL threshold is loosened, the cost per MQL will fall without any real improvement. Watch for definition changes.
- Compare it with the cost per sales qualified lead to see how many MQLs sales actually accepts.
- Include the cost of marketing tools and people, not just media spend, if you want a full picture.
