Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) — Retail
Average total revenue generated from a retail customer over their relationship with the brand
What is Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) — Retail?
Customer lifetime value for a retailer is the total revenue a typical customer is expected to generate over their whole relationship with the brand. It combines how much they spend, how often they buy and how long they stay.
It matters because it sets a ceiling on what a business can sensibly spend to win a customer. Comparing it with acquisition cost shows whether growth is profitable.

- Formula
- Average order value × Average purchase frequency × Average customer lifespan
How to calculate it
Multiply the average order value by the average purchase frequency and by the average customer lifespan.
For example, if customers spend 60 per order, buy 4 times a year and stay for 3 years on average, lifetime value is 60 x 4 x 3 = 720.
This simple method uses averages across all customers. It can be made more useful by calculating it for segments, and by using gross margin instead of revenue if you want the profit a customer is worth.
Where it is used
Setting acquisition budgets
Decide how much can be spent to win a customer while still making a profit.
Segmenting customers
Find the customer groups worth the most and focus retention and marketing on them.
Evaluating loyalty initiatives
Test whether retention work is increasing how long and how much customers spend.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- Lifetime value is a forecast. Treat it as an estimate and revisit it as behaviour changes.
- Use margin rather than revenue when comparing with acquisition cost.
- Averages can hide a small number of very valuable customers. Look at segments.
