Hospital-Acquired Infection (HAI) Rate
Number of healthcare-associated infections per 1,000 patient bed days
What is Hospital-Acquired Infection (HAI) Rate?
Hospital-acquired infection rate is the number of infections patients develop in hospital per thousand bed days. It shows how well infection prevention works.
These infections harm patients and add cost, so a low rate is a key sign of safe care.

- Formula
- (Number of HAIs / Total patient bed days) × 1,000
How to calculate it
Divide the number of hospital-acquired infections by total patient bed days, and multiply by 1,000.
For example, if there were 12 infections over 6,000 bed days, the rate is (12 / 6,000) x 1,000 = 2 per 1,000 bed days.
Use standard surveillance definitions and report by infection type and ward.
