Account Penetration Rate
Percentage of contacts reached within a target account relative to the total buying group or addressable contacts
What is Account Penetration Rate?
Account penetration rate is the percentage of the relevant people in a customer account that a sales team is actively engaged with. It shows how broadly the relationship reaches across the buying group.
Deep relationships across an account make it easier to expand, and protect against losing the account when one contact leaves.

How to calculate it
Divide the number of contacts engaged in the account by the total addressable contacts in the buying group, and multiply by 100.
For example, if an account has 20 relevant decision makers and influencers and the team is engaged with 8 of them, the rate is (8 / 20) x 100 = 40%.
Define the buying group for each account, and count a contact as engaged only after a real interaction such as a meeting or reply.
Where it is used
Planning account growth
Find accounts where relationships are thin and expansion is likely.
Reducing account risk
Spot accounts that depend on a single contact.
Prioritising outreach
Guide which roles to approach next.
How to improve it
Tips and common mistakes
- Engagement should mean a real two-way interaction, not a sent email.
- Ask existing champions for introductions.
- Review the buying group regularly as organisations change.
