Lean Canvas

A one-page business model canvas for validating startup ideas and communicating strategy across 9 key sections.

About Lean Canvas

The Lean Canvas is a one-page business model canvas designed to help founders validate an idea quickly and communicate their strategy. It has nine sections and puts the customer's problem at the centre of the plan.

It was created by Ash Maurya as an adaptation of the Business Model Canvas for start-ups working under high uncertainty. Where the original canvas describes how a business works, the Lean Canvas focuses on what is riskiest about a new idea and what to test first.

How it is structured

The nine sections are Problem, Customer Segments, Unique Value Proposition, Solution, Channels, Revenue Streams, Cost Structure, Key Metrics and Unfair Advantage. Compared with the Business Model Canvas, it replaces partners, activities and resources with problem, solution, key metrics and unfair advantage.

The sections are usually completed in a deliberate order, starting with the problem and customer segments, because a solution only matters if a specific group of people has a problem worth solving.

Use cases

  • Validating a start-up idea

Capture the core assumptions on one page and prioritise which to test with real customers.

  • Pitching to stakeholders

Give investors, partners or colleagues a quick, structured summary of the opportunity.

  • Exploring pivots

Create alternative canvases for different problems or customer segments and compare them.

How to use it

Tips and common mistakes

  • Fill it in quickly and revise often. A canvas that takes hours to complete is being over-thought.
  • Be honest about the unfair advantage. If there is none yet, leave it blank rather than inventing one.
  • Choose metrics that show real customer behaviour, not vanity numbers.
