Gap Analysis
A bridge-metaphor gap analysis: where you stand today, the target state you are aiming for, and the sequence of moves that carries you across the gap between them.
About Gap Analysis
Gap analysis compares where you are today with where you want to be and identifies what needs to happen to close the difference. It turns a broad ambition into a specific list of changes.
Think of it as a bridge: the current state on one side, the target state on the other and the sequence of moves that carries you across the gap between them. It suits any situation where you know the destination and need a route.

How it is structured
A gap analysis has three parts. The current state describes the position today in concrete terms. The target state describes the position you are aiming for, ideally with measures. The gap is the difference between them, and the actions are the steps that will close it.
The analysis is only as useful as the definitions at either end. Vague descriptions of today or of the target produce vague gaps, so both should be stated in terms that can be checked.
Use cases
Strategic planning
Compare current performance with strategic goals and decide where to focus.
Capability assessment
Identify skills, systems or processes that are missing for a new direction.
Process improvement
Compare how a process runs now with the standard you want and plan the improvements.
How to use it
Tips and common mistakes
- Measure both ends in the same way so the gap is a genuine comparison.
- Do not try to close every gap at once. Sequence the moves and start with those that unlock others.
- Revisit the analysis as you progress, since the target itself may change.
